Happy Bealtaine

Generally I don’t like to make New Year resolutions because A) I never follow them through so feel like I have failed with something and B) I don’t think changes can only be made at the new year, they should happen all year round. Having said that, this year I have tried to give myself a focus or aspiration which might be in line with a resolution;  to try new experiences and get as much as I can out of life! That includes doing things I would normally find daunting or hold back from for various reasons (hence this blog).  So far this year’s “resolution” has been working out and I have been opening myself up to situations I normally would have shied away from but the big test came this weekend; I went to the festival of fires.

A quick summary of FoF for those who have never heard of it before:
The ancient Celts had four main celebrations throughout the year; Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane (Beltaine/Bealtaine in Ireland) and Lughnasadh. Each represented the beginning of a new season and had different traditions accordingly. Beltain was a fire festival which took place at the start of May to herald the start of summer bursting with fertility and life. One of the ceremonial highlights of the festival was the lighting of a fire set on a hill in the centre of Ireland which was then carried to hilltops in every county in the land. This traditionally took place on the Hill of Uisneach in County Westmeath and there are many different connections between this site and ancient Irish lore. In the last few years, there has been a renewal of this celebration on the hill each May which is called the Festival of Fires

What attracted to me to the festival when I first heard about it was the historical aspect – I loved the idea that it is a tradition that took place thousands of years ago on the exact same spot. For as long as I can remember I have had a slight (huge) obsession with any ancient Irish history, my mam says it started when I was about 5/6 years old when I saw the Robin Hood movie (the one with Kevin Costner) and from then on I only wanted to be a medieval princess that lived in a castle haha. Now I know that was English but I think it was the imagery of that time what sparked it off. I clearly remember learning about Irish history in primary school – the Fianna, Cu Chulainn, about how the Vikings came and even things like the fulacht fia. I had books as a child about the sagas of Ireland which told of the Children of Lir and the Tuatha De Dannan, we often visited the heritage centre just outside Wexford where they brought you around mock villages and ruins - I apparently stood with the tour guide the entire time questioning him on everything (I was probably about 8/9 at this point?)… the list goes on and on and on, going right into my teens. I was always told I was born in the wrong century and when asked, I always wanted to go back to that time if I was given a time machine haha.

So you can see how this was right up my alley but not only that, it called to me from a spiritual point of view too. I don’t have a tendency to discuss my belief system with people, I am pretty private about what I grasp as the core truth to how I live my life and why I am here on this earth. I don’t know why I am quiet about it… maybe it is connected to growing up in a strong catholic household or because people don’t really discuss things like religion any more. I know a lot of young people don’t bring it up in conversation anyway. I am slowly trying to change that though and open up about it. I feel it is important for people to talk about these things because it is through sharing or debating ideas that you can challenge yourself to find the answers. You might not even know what it is that you do believe in – or not as the case maybe if you’re an atheist. Anyways, my beliefs are pagan in origin and the closest term for what I believe in is known as pantheism which is the concept that through all life runs an energy or divinity and that everything is connected through it. I have always felt an affinity to the earth and the more I read or study the natural or holistic approach to the world around me, the more reinforced I feel about my beliefs. Having said that, I have never actively done something that expresses my spirituality which only dawned on me while I was at the festival. Being there yesterday felt natural. Everyone around me was there for different reasons; there were pagans of all sects, Druids, Christians, people who were just out to enjoy the music or the fire, families who were just out for the day. But there was a feeling that everyone accepted each other and acted however they wished openly.

The biggest leap into the unknown for me with this weekend was the fact that I went to the festival on my own. Over the years there has been loads of different things that I have wanted to do, traveling, festivals, classes, parties etc., which I ended up never doing because I had no one to do it with at the time. When I saw the website a few months ago, I instantly had the feeling that I had to be there this year but then it crossed my mind; who would I get to come with me? I knew I needed to apply for the time off with work early enough so that I got it so the commitment to go was there but I didn’t know who else would enjoy it or would have the time/money to do it. After a lot of hmm-ing and haw-ing I thought screw that I’m old enough and bold enough to just go without someone holding my hand, so I bought my ticket and didn’t think about it again. The last week leading up to it though I was starting to think would I be ok with it when I’m actually there. I was a little apprehensive about what I would do for the entire day and would I be able to sustain my own interest without someone to share it with. Boy was I wrong!

At the festival I never once felt on my own, everywhere I went people were interacting with each other and sharing ideas with each other. Even if you were shy and didn’t want to initiate a conversation, if you stood still long enough someone would come over and talk to you! At one point I was standing reading a sign (the one below) and a girl standing beside me started to talk to me, just about the day and how was I finding it etc. We talked for all of 5 minutes or so but it was if we were catching up having not seen each other in ages. Then as she turned to leave she wished me a good day and gave me a hug as if we were old friends. Later, I was sitting on a log seat writing (I had brought my writing book with me in case I got inspired, which I did…A LOT) when someone sitting near me asked me what I was writing. I talked to her for a while and then she had to go, so I returned to my thoughts and 1 min later I had another girl sit down beside me and again asked me what I was up to! Within a few mins all her friends came over and I sat there for about an hour laughing with them. I’ve never had that happen before… it feels like it takes me ages to pluck up the courage to talk to people and I spent the day talking to people from all walks of life which was a new thing for me. And what’s more, I loved every second of it.

Here are some more pictures from the day:

The festival itself was fantastic; the positive attitude was refreshing, the art and creativity there was inspiring, the atmosphere was welcoming and open. I felt a real calm about the place and it was small enough that you never got lost. I didn’t see any fighting and though people were drinking, it wasn’t a drinking festival and there were no overtly drunk people that you would associate with festivals. My favourite part of the whole thing was the fire parade and the fire itself. The sun had just gone down and on top of the hill it was starting to get rather cold as the wind blew in. Then came this glorious huge fire which was so bright in the dark and the heat that blasted out of it was unreal. There is something very hypnotic about watching flames flicker and dance over wood… People stood watching the flames for a long time, cheering whenever the pyre broke and crumbled.

I cannot wait until next year, I am definitely going again.

Blankety Blank

What do you write when you draw a blank? I have tried to write this over the last 2 weeks and every time I try nothing flows. I don’t know what to talk about… my ink well is dry. Why is it not happening for me? I don’t really know. I feel like I’m out of the loop right now, just going through the motions and not really in touch with my life at the moment. I also think some self-doubt is sinking in and with self-doubt always comes caution and a hesitation which basically means I cop out of doing whatever it is I’m meant to be doing. Every day is like the day before at the moment, I need a spark… something to kick start and make things fun again. I need my motivation back. But its ok cos ya see I do this all the time, I’m quite used to it by now. So why not write about that - not being able to write. I’m going to just start typing and see what happens…

My mam says my room is like a representation of my mind; when it’s scrambled and disorganised my room is all over the place. When I start to get my head together I tend to clean my room out and look at things in a new light. Today I was sitting on my bed, quite frankly doing nothing but wasting time online which I swore I was going to put a stop to, when I looked up and noticed my room. It’s a complete and utter mess with piles of things everywhere, things that I was meant to sort or put away, a full rubbish bin and just random clutter everywhere. I thought ugh oh I had taken my eye off the ball here and let stuff mount up again which as it happens seems to reflect where I am in my head too so my mam must be right about this one (she tends to always be right but shhh don’t tell her I said that).

I like to sit and look around me at times and take in everything that’s going on. I feel it’s healthy to do so, to question things and to check in on myself.  Am I happy here? Am I ok with the direction things are going in and if not what direction should I be going instead? I’m not writing as much as before, why? All the great intentions but when it really comes down to it, do I do any of it? I have been home sick the last few days with a bad cold and really sore throat so have had a lot of time for reflection on what I want out of life. Overall I’m happy, I know I am, yet why is it I don’t feel… fulfilled? I want more out of my life than what I have right now. I have more courses coming up (one in just over a week, I cannot wait! :D), I am finally getting a handle on a healthier lifestyle with nutritious food and plenty of water, I have a festival next weekend to look forward to, a gig and mini holiday at the end of the month… I mean I should feel like everything is good. Yet right now I feel like I need to shake it all up a bit; try something NEW.

The initial part of learning and growing from any situation in life is recognising when you have a problem or issue in the first place right? Ok well I am grasping that concept a lot the last year or so with just about every aspect of my life. I am starting to find the core little routines which I go autopilot on – almost subconsciously at times – that need to change for me to get different outcomes then what I am getting. At this point the Albert Einstein quote echoes somewhere in my brain: Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” I keep expecting life to change and be different yet I keep reacting the same way to issues that I come across… why do I not notice this?? So that’s my new focus, things have to change for me to feel different. My reactions have to change, my motivation has to change. I tend to go all or nothing; full blast then I burn out and puff it’s over. That will not last so maybe I need to hold back a bit and try to keep a steady flow of motivation instead? I know I need to interact with humans more instead of via the internet or texting, I need to communicate more in general and I need to change the way in which I communicate too. I also think I’m missing the spontaneity my life at the moment. I am too safe and controlled… most of all I really need to let go of what other people think of me – even you reading this which scares me.

I am now gone way past any structure in this blog and have landed in a ramble but, considering that I couldn’t seem to write anything before this, I’m happy that I have gotten this far. Forgive me but I am only human and still fumbling about learning what it is I want to achieve with all of this… Anyway, I shall ponder over my jabberings above and come up with some sort of structure as to what I want to do about it all, get my ducks in a row as it were, and see if that will bring back my skills of writing for my next blog haha.

It's the simple things...

It’s all about appreciating the small things in life… These are some that have made me happy this week:

Yes the tv series is awesome but nothing can touch just how amazing the books are… I’m completely obsessed and cannot put them down.

Nothing can cheer you up more on a crappy day in work than hearing your favourite band play in one of the screens <3

I have reached my first stone this week, one down - many more to go!

My sunflowers are coming along nicely :)

Fab song to bellow out in the car when no one is around to hear ya sing…

Flicking about on the tv the other night and this was on,
I forgot how cheese-tastic this movie really is!

I love finding simple yet powerful images that make you think.

And finally…

Dear Emma

The only rule I had when I started this blog was to be honest and speak about what was on my mind, trying not to hold back out of fear or concern but I was also aware that everyone has different views about life and not everyone would agree with what I talk about. With that on my mind I was prepared for a little reaction from people around me whenever I released a blog, hoping that if it was negative I could deal with it. What I wasn’t prepared for was such a positive reaction from people and some of the really lovely things that has been said to me. The past week has been especially touching as coincidentally a few close members of my extended family separately contacted me with some very heartfelt comments about my blog and how they thought about me; I actually found it very humbling and was really touched by it so I would like to say thank you (you know who you are) for being so uplifting and positive :)

My reaction to hearing such nice things was typically “I didn’t think they thought so highly of me” and “I didn’t realise I had made that much of an impact for them to think that way” which I verbalised to my mam in a stunned kind of way and we talked about how you affect people around you on a daily basis and never realise it. You could make someone’s day with a comment or a helping hand and to you it was a passing insignificant interaction. I thought wouldn’t it be lovely if everyone knew how much they were needed or wanted in the world by their families, friends, work colleagues, strangers… when someone does something or means something to you in your life that you would tell them so that they know. I have decided I’m going to do more of it, starting right now actually.

Dear Emma,

You are probably going to kill me for writing this so publicly but I have to because, well, there is an unwritten rule that the older sister has to mortify the younger one at least once a month to keep them in check. Now my only real issue is where to start! Well it all started on the 2nd of May when… nah this isn’t “this is your life” haha. There might be an embarrassing picture though be warned!

I’m proud to call you my sister, there is no one out there like you (which you will happily declare to anyone around regardless if they are listening or not haha). You are so intelligent yet you don’t seem to realise it – you underestimate just how smart you actually are. You are such a quick thinker and you have great knack for recognising your own strengths too and then using them to the full. I have never met anyone (bar Dad) who has your level of motivation for life. It’s as if you don’t have a stop button sometimes, you just see your target and shoot off to get it. You are stunningly beautiful not to mention really photogenic. I love how quirky you are, how you express yourself and how ditzy you can be when you are giddy haha. You are hilarious. Like I mean can’t breathe, totally uncontrollable, I’m-going-to-wet-myself-laughing hilarious… and yes you are witty and colourful, extremely loud and very confident yet underneath that you have a very emotional depth to your soul which for me is the true nature of how good a person you are.

I love being around you, you put me at ease and it feels like home when your there.  I can still see us under the stairs writing our newspaper or laying under the Christmas tree in the hall looking up among the branches at the lights – do you remember making a nest for the robin? Or racing across the corridor to jump on each other’s beds… There were the nights where we would move the bed so that if we left the doors open we could talk to each other.  That’s not to mention the midnight trips to Tescos, the night you climbed into Roo’s bed in the kitchen, the umpteen movies we would watch at like 3am when the rents were up in bed and I won’t talk about the drunken stuff hahaha! We have laughed, we have cried, we have argued and we have sat in silence but through everything I have always felt safe with you, I trust you and I owe my sanity to you. You have been there for me through everything; you were the shoulder I cried on and the most understanding when I didn’t even understand things myself. You have changed me in so many ways by just being you and I want you to know how special you are not only to me but to so many others who I know would feel the same way.

I miss you every day but I love how you are living your life for you and not settling for something that would make you unhappy. It also gives me an excuse to take loads of little holidays throughout the year haha…

I love you,
Yay-yay xx

P.s. I did warn you about the pic… sorry.
